Maldives won its independence over Britain in 1965 and changed to republic in 1968. Geologically speaking, Maldives is located in the center of the Indian Ocean and composed of 1.190 small islands, 200 of which are populated and on which there are 80 hotels for vacations. Despite the total area of only 298 sq.km, Maldives has covered sea areas of 100.000 sq.km, and has advantageous conditions to develop its tourism. The separate islands are of different size and characteristic with the resort hotels of different styles.

Maldives is in the southern sea area of Sri Lanka and came to light in A.D. 150, referring to, at that time, the islands on the west coast of Ceylon. There were lots of ships from Eastern Africa and the Arab world passing by and the crew found it was a fantastic and convenient port of call and were obsessed by its beautiful and peaceful landscapes. Finally, they even settled down here. The year of A.D. 1513 was an important turning point of Maldives in history because since then the doctrine of Mohammed had been spreading over the islands, which now has become deep – rooted in the Maldivian people.

The Maldivians and tourists can travel among these islands by a traditional boat called Dhonis. All parts of Dhonis are obtained from coconut trees. Owing to the contact with the sea for over 2000 years, the people have mastered splendid technique of shipbuilding. There is an airport in the island which is close to Mali Island. After the tourists arrive in the international airport here, they will immediately feel relaxed. There is only five minutes' walk from the airport to the dock and the boats and ships employed by those hotels have been waiting for the tourists there. It will take you 20 to 40 minutes to reach these islands.

Due to the small size of these islands, there are limited sorts of animals and plants on them such as seabirds which fall into several categories like the wild duck, cormorant, etc. There are also a small number of gray herons and parrots on a few islands. Furthermore, the locals are raising livestock like chicken, goats and cows to support their lives. The most peculiar thing is that Maldives has over seven hundred kinds of fishes in the surrounding water area, most of them coral reef fish. The fishes are of different colors, sizes and shapes so they would be an amazing scenic spot for divers.
