The second selected rumor is "earth magnetic field weakens and turns". It is real from the point of phenomenon. But, the earth magnetic field turned nearly 171 times in the past 78 million years. While the latest one ended in 7.8 million years ago. So the current earth still needs thousands of years to finish this inversion. In fact, the deep sea settlings which come from marine drilling shows that earth magnetic field is active recently.
Generally speaking, the earth magnetic field can be divided as two parts, and the most important one is the dipole magnetic field which is like bar magnet. While the other one is earth shell magnetic field, which formed when the melting rocks solidify. It records the direction of dipole magnetic field. As time went by and evolved, the earth shell magnetic field accumulates and makes up together. Moreover, the strength reaches to 10 percent of geomagnetic dipole field. The magnetic dipole field which can be used in course setting compass is made by electric current in external liquid of earth. With the change of electric current, it will strengthen or weaken, and the position of south pole and north pole will move slightly at the same time.
In the past hundreds of years, scientists made sensitive equipments to track earth magnetic field. The strength of earth main magnetic field will weaken about 5 percent each century. If this rate continued low, then the geomagnetic dipole field's strength will be weak than the irregular earth magnetic field in 1000 or 2000 years. But will the geomagnetic dipole field really weaken? We do not know yet, because we do not count the geomagnetic polarity reversal phenomenon. In 2001, Canadian Arctic expedition reported that the magnetic pole action is accelerating. It stayed in the northwest of Canada for a century and will move to north pole quickly in 2030, and then to the north of Siberia in 22st century.
Since the magnetic field is an important buffer, which protects earth from the invasion of cosmic rays and charged particle. So you may consider that the disappearance of magnetic field will result terrible ecological crisis. But the geologic records, the earth's magnetic pole will reverse one time every 5 million years. And the strength of magnetic dipole field will reduce to the standard of earth shell magnetic field. The several times reversions did not leave any marks which can be found by physical method. So for biosphere, it will never bring any serious problems to us.
There are many kinds of birds and fishes can feel the magnetic field's direction, which is the base for migration and foraging. When the local magnetic field change to make them can not find direction or foods, these species or other animals whose adaptive capacity is poor will extinguish suddenly.
